Corporate Telephone Preference Service – make sure you’re legal

With effect from 25th June 2004 anyone promoting products and services to business customers by phone must ensure that the business they are calling has not registered with the Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS) to opt out of receiving unsolicited telephone calls for direct marketing purposes.

Failure to do so could result in enforcement action by the Information Commissioner and a fine of up to £5000.

To avoid a fine you can license a copy of the Corporate TPS file at a cost of £3750 per annum to check numbers which have ‘opted out’ before you make B2B calls.

A more cost effective way of checking individual numbers free of charge is to visit www.numbercheck.co.uk. This website checks individual business or consumer telephone numbers against the TPS. The service also offers free checking of fax numbers against the existing Fax Preference Service List (FPS).
