Forget what business you are in – what do you actually do?
When somebody asks you this question, most people respond like this:
“What is it you do?”
“We’re accountants.”
“OK, so what do you DO?”
Maybe you keep a company’s accounts in order, or maybe you are very adept at understanding the way businesses work and provide business consultancy. However, this still doesn’t answer the question.
What do you do? You could say, “We help our clients to become efficient and profitable” – this sounds much more appealing to a prospect than saying “We’re accountants.”!
Opportunities for growth can lie outside of the confines of your industry description – often they can be found in the answer to “What are we good at?”. Think about where your skills lie and it may help you to develop a whole new approach to your marketing.
